About the Artist
“James Kinny’s paintings in “Roil and Hush” at Matter and Light are like beautiful scars, denoting suffering and repair, ugly truth and hidden beauty. Their record of the passage of time, in igneous layers of jeweled tones that erupt from Italian earth colors, evokes the gritty accretion of chewing gum on a sidewalk that has been transformed by Kinny’s decisions into transcendent expressions of humanity.” – Sue Post, Delicious Line
James Kinny (American) was born and lived the early part of his life in Iowa. In 1985, he moved to Boston, where he currently works and lives. Kinny’s earliest memories – from about age four – are of drawing and making things, and he began to take art classes during his early school years, all the while continuing to draw, paint and sculpt on his own. He pursued his study of art at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, continuing the pursuit at Mass College of Art and then the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
